90 Is The New 40

I know I shoot several people over and over, but I can’t get enough of Ilona Royce Smithkin. At 90 years old she is busier than ever, performing her “Eyelash Cabaret” act a few times a month and getting together with her network of amazing friends. The truth is I become friends with the people I photograph and we get to spend a lot of time together. Ilona and I talk a few times a week, we go over our current projects and she offers me great advice and onion soup.
Ilona is always up for participating in creative projects. I had to do a photo essay for my photography class, so I decided to do a day in the life of Ilona. She proves that age is just a state of mind and 90 really is the new 40! I hope you enjoy this small selection from my assignment.

Freedom of Expression

[Fashion Consultant Tziporah Salamon ]

Another great thing about Advanced Style ,besides the stories behind the clothes, is the freedom with which older people express their personal style. At a certain age there are no more rules to follow, no more dress codes beyond the ones set upon oneself. I have 80 year old ladies email me that they finally feel the freedom and permission to wear colorful socks. Where many might think of this as overly eccentric, I feel it’s a great expression of personality and independent spirit. Just because you are older doesn’t mean you can’t wear bright colors and patterns. When I ask people why they choose to dress in vibrant clothes or color their hair wild shades, the answer is pretty much always the same. It lifts their spirits and the spirits of others and they no longer have to dress to impress other people.

I was recently interviewed by the UK Telegraph about Advanced Style. Here is an excerpt from the piece:

Cohen moved to New York from Seattle and one day, he says, he saw a documentary about an actress called Mimi Weddell, who died last year. She was addicted to wearing hats, and her style credentials were so shimmering she even appeared in Sex and the City. “She was so stylish and elegant in her early nineties,” Cohen says. “She had a sense of personal style and freedom.” The word freedom, I sense, is the key. “Older people wear their clothes with confidence because they no longer have anyone to impress,” he says. “I see more beauty in them. These pictures are not just images. Each one tells a story.” I agree with him. No one, for me, looks more like a woman than an old woman.”One of the best examples of this sense of freedom is 90 year old Ilona Smithkin. She is a fearless lover of color and does things her own way. She has always dressed up, but with time she has learned to be confident in her artistic expression. Advanced Style is about personal style and living life to the fullest. No matter what your style choices are learn from these brave spirits who do it their own way.

Our Better Half’s in Londontown

As many of you know, our photographer Ari Seth Cohen is currently in London doing some scouting for the Advanced Style project with Selfridges. If we’re lucky he’ll get some pics of the ladies and gents on the “To-Do List” I gave him… Who doesn’t want some style tips from the Queen!?

While Ari’s away I’ll be holding down the fort and posting tips from our favorite Advanced Style characters. Each Monday we’ll take on a new topic and you’ll get to hear what Debra, Jenny, MaryAnn, Ilona (and more!) have to say about dressing up while on the road, what bag to carry, skincare, etc…

In the mean time, we’d love to hear more about our readers.
It will help us shape what sort of posts we do during our collective summer vacation…

What’s your age?
Male or female?
Where do you spend most of your time?
What are your hobbies?
What sort of work do you do?
What is your favorite era of style?

Send your submissions (and feel free to send pictures!) to:

I’ll be here at my computer, in a one-piece and a headscarf…

Summer Heat, Keeping Cool: Advice On How To Stay Cool From Broadway Star George Mann

[Photos: Ari Seth Cohen, Text: Maayan Zilberman]

Ari and I were walking after work yesterday and kvetching about the heat, as if it were our first summer EVER in New York City. Being it my 16th summer in this sweltering mess, I thought it about time to get some advice from our elders on how to make it through the season.
Our biggest question is how to look chic while covered up. I’m always two shakes away from leaving the house in a swimsuit, and then think twice when I imagine what Ilona, Carol, or Tracy might say to that.

As we strolled along Madison Avenue after dinner time, Ari and I had the pleasure of meeting this enchanting couple who answered our prayers with solutions to the temperature issue. With such infectious smiles we realized that with their attitude you don’t even notice the heat!

We first noticed George Mann, retired Broadway actor, because of his crisp charcoal linen suit and pressed white shirt. We love the playful floral pattern of his handkerchief that plays off the retro look of his wife’s silk jersey dress. They said “we dress down all day but always dress up to go to dinner, no matter the season.”

Both husband and wife have impeccable taste when it comes to eyewear. Lots of you ask us how to choose frames that are vintage but not too costume-y… well, here’s a perfect example. We also love George’s aviators, we’re guessing they are old frames but updated with his current prescription. We think more men should try this!

One of the top items on Ari’s “Kvetch List” yesterday was what sort of shoes he should wear for the summer and what shoes to pack for the humidity in Europe (for the Advanced Style Tour!)…
I say George has the right idea with his matte ivory-polished wing-tipped oxfords. His wife told us he asked if he could wear them to dinner this night, and we’re glad they decided it was a good idea! She says “They’re over 50 years old!”… to which he mutters “You know I don’t like when you say that…”
“Oh well”, she says,” they’re vintage, and so are we!”

Now that’s how to keep it cool.

I fell in love with this editorial published in ” Dazed and Confused” a while back and wanted to share it here. Advanced Style embodies the spirit of playfulness and having fun with fashion . Personal style is a creative form of expression that can keep people youthful and vital. Not only is age not an excuse not to dress up anymore, it is the exact opposite. People like Ilona,Debra,Tziporah,Maryann and all of the other fantastic advanced stylistas feel that age has allowed them to become more free and express themselves without seeking approval from others. Years of experience have helped to shape their ideas about style and creativity and with age these ideas continue to advance and transform!
